Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll returned to the crease on Friday night for the first time since December 7th. The only kicker is that he made his return for the AHL's Toronto Marlies.

The 25-year-old, was assigned to the Marlies this week on a conditioning loan. Woll had been practicing with the Leafs before they departed for their four-game road trip, but with no practices during their trip, the decision was made for Woll to get some time with the Marlies to ramp up his endurance before re-joining the Leafs. His first call to game action occurred last night when the Marlies took on the Laval Rocket.
The American netminder was sharp, making 36 saves in the 4-1 victory. It was a busy evening as the Marlies were penalized a shocking nine times. The team went eight for nine on the penalty kill. Woll fully earned this win, being forced to deal with Laval players crashing the net on multiple occasions, going extra hard at the young netminder, who is recovering from a high-ankle sprain. Obviously, the Marlies players and the Leafs' organization weren't too pleased about that.
Woll has record of 8-5-1 with a .916 save percentage and 2.80 GAA this season as a Leaf. The hope is that once he's back with the big club in Toronto, he'll be able to pick up where he left off. His return is likely to occur at some point this week.
