When a player signs a professional tryout (PTO), they have to really impress the team and show them they deserve on the full-time roster. For some players, it works out and for others, it doesn't and they're released. Well, for two veteran defenders their "last chances" turned into identical one-year contracts.

Per Chris Johnston, after completing their PTOs in Anaheim and Carolina, Nathan Beaulieu (ANA) and Calvin de Haan (CAR) signed a one year $850K contracts with their respective teams.

Nathan Beaulieu, 29 and Calvin De Haan, 31 are both coming off of mediocre seasons. De Haan played 69 games last season with the Chicago Blackhawks and had a total of 8 points. Beaulieu played 24 games last season with the Winnipeg Jets and had 4 points all of which were assists.

Since both are shutdown defenders, neither is going to shoot the lights out, but they did enough to show Anaheim and Carolina that they have value to their clubs.
