It's been a while since the Toronto Maple Leafs have had to deal with the problem between the pipes that was Carey Price.
Due to injuries, Price has not played in the NHL since late April of 2022, and was recently traded to the San Jose Sharks for mostly cap savings. He'll finish out the one year left on his current contract on long-term injured reserve (LTIR) there.

Talk of a potential comeback heated up this week when Price was spotted in San Jose at the Sharks' training facility.
That talk was quickly shut down with a simple explanation. With one year remaining on his contract, Price still has to go through the same physical examination as all other players and get his official ruling from the doctors. In other words, a routine visit that had to happen. Nothing with his situation changes.

As for why the Sharks would take on the contract of a goaltender they will never use, San Jose is in the beginning stages of a rebuild and is expected to trade away more veteran players at the deadline. Taking on Price's $10.5 million deal (of which they only pay $2 million in actual cash) allows the team to stay above the salary cap floor.
The Canadiens, on the other hand, freed up cap space for the 2025-26 season, given them another $4.6 million to play with.
