Former Maple Leafs forward Josh Leivo's season in the KHL has gotten off to a rough start after he was handed a multi-game suspension for a ridiculous reason.
In mid-August, it was reported that former Maple Leaf Josh Leivo
was going to have his contract terminated by his KHL team, Salavat Yulayev, due to not showing up for the start of training camp due to a work Visa issue.
It came as a surprise that Salavat would terminate the contract of the KHL's highest scoring player last season, but it didn't take long for the 32-year-old to find a new home, signing a one-year deal with Chelyabinsk Traktor.
Josh Leivo Facing More Outlandish Discipline From KHL
After playing two games for Chelyabinsk, where he tallied a goal and three assists, Leivo has
been handed a two-game suspension. Not for anything he did during a game, but for not attending last season's awards ceremony where he was named the KHL's MVP.
While NHL players have faced suspension for not attending the NHL's All-Star Game at times, suspending a player for not attending an awards ceremony has to be one of the more ridiculous reasons to be suspended.
The 32-year-old set the KHL record for goals, scoring 49 goals and adding another 31 assists for 80 points in just 60 games last season.
The former third-round pick of the Leafs hasn't played an NHL game since the 2022-23 season, but should he replicate his success last season again this year, he may very well find his way back to the NHL.
