After much speculation, GTA native Tyler Toffoli has opted to test the free agent market on July 1st, giving the Maple Leafs another enticing potential target.
AFP Analytics has Toffoli's current contract projection set at $6M per season over a 4-year term, which does feel a tough high for the 32-year-old winger. However, he did score 33 goals last season, split between the New Jersey Devils and Winnipeg Jets and he also had 34 goals just one year prior in Calgary.
Rumour has it that Toffoli, a life-long Maple Leafs fan, has been anticipating putting a Leafs jersey on for a long time, so there's a potential fit there, especially given Toffoli's recent scoring history. There's also the connection to Leafs GM Brad Treliving, who acquired the sniper during his time in Calgary to consider.
Obviously, there's only so much money to go around, though, so if Toffoli wants to be a Maple Leaf bad enough, he may need to make peace with the fact that he'll have to leave some money on the table.
