TSN's Craig Button urged Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving to learn from a major mistake he made while with the Calgary Flames in negotiations with Matthew Knies.

Brad Treliving admitted during his year-end press conference that he would like to lock up Matthew Knies to an extension a href='https://www.mapleleafsdaily.com/nhl-team/toronto-maple-leafs/leafs-gm-brad-treliving-creates-excitement-with-comments-surrounding-matthew-knies' class=lien marqueur target='_blank' rel-'noopener'>'as soon as possible'.
His comments about getting an extension for Knies done quickly all but confirmed Elliotte Friedman's earlier reports of an internal deadline the Leafs set of June 30th before Knies would be subject to offer-sheets.

Brad Treliving Can't Repeat his Mistake From Calgary with Matthew Knies in Toronto

Friday, on 'Leafs Morning Take', TSN's Craig Button discussed Knies' potential extension with Carter Hutton and Nick Alberga where he urged Treliving to learn from his time in Calgary and how he handled negotiations with another high-profile restricted free agent.
"My understanding is all Tkachuk was asking for was the Draisait contract... That would have been a phenomenal contract for Tkachuk and the Calgary Flames. Brad, went short term. He ended up losing Matthew Tkachuk. I think - if anything - that the Matthew Tkachuk situation should be a guideline for Brad Treliving to sign him to 8 years.."

Reports have indicated that there is a mutual interest between Knies and the Leafs to get a long-term extension done, but as always, it comes down to the cap hit that it would take.

In Knies' case, any deal other than a five-year deal would work in the sense that only a five-year deal would walk the Arizona native to free agency. Deals shorter than five would leave Knies as a restricted free agent and any deal longer would eat up at least one year of unrestricted free agency.

The 22-year-old is coming off of a 29-goal, 58-point campaign and will only see his role increased next season with the departure of Mitch Marner at some point this off-season.
