The Leafs find themselves in a tricky situation with veteran forward Calle Järnkrok playing too well to overlook, creating a difficult roster decision for the team.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are coming off of back-to-back disappointing losses to the Detroit Red Wings, most recently falling 3-2 on Monday afternoon.
Despite the team's sluggish start, one player who has stood out early in the season is the 34-year-old Calle Järnkrok.
Long viewed as a potential trade candidate, Järnkrok has started the 2025-26 campaign on fire, recording three goals in his first three games -- arguably making him the Leafs' most consistent forward through that stretch.
Of course, no one expects that pace to continue, but Järnkrok's early performance is exactly the kind of spark Toronto needs from its depth veterans.

Veteran Calle Järnkrok Playing too Good to be Moved

Since joining the Maple Leafs, Järnkrok's tenure has been marked by inconsistency and injury -- unlike his earlier years, when he was a reliable near-20-goal scorer.
Many viewed him as a potential bubble player entering this season, but his strong play may make it difficult for the coaching staff to take him out of the lineup.
Meanwhile, Steven Lorentz, the hometown forward, continues to recover from injury, with head coach Craig Berube suggesting he could return sooner rather than later.
However, with rookie Easton Cowan impressing in his first NHL appearance and Järnkrok thriving, finding room in the lineup could prove challenging without a trade or roster move incoming the near future.
For Järnkrok, the situation is simple -- as long as he keeps producing, he wins either way. His strong play will either raise his trade value or cement his place with the Maple Leafs.
Unfortunately for the remaining bottom six players, though, he'll be forcing someone out of the lineup if he does remain in Toronto.

If Järnkrok Stays, Who Goes in Toronto?

It's tough to pinpoint where the Leafs stand with this decision, but the most likely outcome here seems to be that Nicolas Robertson could be out of a job if Järnkrok's strong play continues.
Järnkrok simply has more versatility and appears to be the much more effective player, and the proof is in the numbers. Through 3 games thus far, Robertson has recorded 0 points and is a -2 rating, whereas Järnkrok has 3 goals and is a is +2 rating.
The Leafs are back at it on Tuesday evening against the Nashville Predators, so it will be interesting to see what happens with Steven Lorentz and whether or not he's ready to return.
If he does return, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Robertson come out of the lineup. It also wouldn't be a surprise to see Robertson traded at some point in the next couple of weeks, especially if the injured Scott Laughton begins to make strides towards a return as well.
