The Toronto Maple Leafs and general manager Kyle Dubas have quite the puzzle to piece together this offseason. The team is tight against the cap with only four defenseman signed and three very important restricted free agent forwards needing new contracts. Mitch Marner of course is the big one as he's expected to get a huge pay raise possibly in the $10million per season range. The Leafs' don't have much cap space, only $5million at the moment and maybe up to $7-10million depending on how much the cap raises. Many analysts and reporters are expecting a salary dump and the two top candidates for many are Nazem Kadri and Patrick Marleau. Kadri has a modified no trade clause and a suspension history that some teams might not want to deal with. Marleau is 39 years old and carries a full no movement clause and as Elliotte Friedman points out, something else that might be a huge road block in a trade. The forward's contract comes with a signing bonus that's paid in two instalments, one in July and one in December which Friedman points out is an added "wrinkle" in any potential trade.
