26-year-old centre officially made available and could be the perfect piece to help bolster the Maple Leafs' forward corps ahead of the 2025-26 season.
As the Toronto Maple Leafs' offseason continues, some fans have criticized the team's moves, as they have been unable to secure a true top-6 forward.
However, that perception could change quickly, as a promising young forward has just become available -- and he might be exactly what Toronto needs.
Reports indicate that 26-year-old Boston Bruins forward
Casey Mittelstadt has been made available for trade.
According to hockey writer James Murphy, as shared by NHL Rumours Report on X:
"Casey Mittelstadt could potentially be on the move, according to sources."
Murphy also noted that this isn't a major surprise, as Mittelstadt was reportedly not the Bruins' primary target in the deal that brought him to Boston.
"There was a common feeling that he wasn't their main target when they traded for him; Zellers and the second-round draft pick were."
While Mittelstadt is not a high-end offensive threat, he is a reliable centreman who could address Toronto's need for improved centre depth. He also has the ability to play wing.
He also carries a reasonable cap hit of $5.75 million for the next two seasons, a crucial factor for a Maple Leafs team that is often tight against the salary cap.
With the Bruins now potentially ready to move on, the Maple Leafs may have a second chance, and the pieces to make a bigger push for him this time around.
