However, that perception could change quickly, as a promising young forward has just become available -- and he might be exactly what Toronto needs.

Reports indicate that 26-year-old Boston Bruins forward Casey Mittelstadt has been made available for trade.

While Mittelstadt is not a high-end offensive threat, he is a reliable centreman who could address Toronto's need for improved centre depth. He also has the ability to play wing.

Last season, he tallied 40 points in 81 games split between the Bruins and Colorado Avalanche. Known for his versatility and playmaking -- skills he first showcased with the Buffalo Sabres -- Mittelstadt could be a valuable middle-six option for the Leafs, who lack in the depth scoring department.

He also carries a reasonable cap hit of $5.75 million for the next two seasons, a crucial factor for a Maple Leafs team that is often tight against the salary cap.

Toronto was reportedly interested in Mittelstadt at last season's trade deadline, but ultimately lost out to Boston.

With the Bruins now potentially ready to move on, the Maple Leafs may have a second chance, and the pieces to make a bigger push for him this time around.
