If the Toronto Maple Leafs want to maximize a potential return for Mitch Marner, there's an interesting trade proposition that could be made with the Dallas Stars.

The likelihood of Mitch Marner returning to the Toronto Maple Leafs next season seems unlikely and considering they attempted to trade him at this year's trade deadline, they definitely tried their best to maximize a return for the pending unrestricted free agent.
With free agency looming, the Maple Leafs could look to flip him in a potential sign-and-trade and the Dallas Stars could have exactly what they're looking for in forward Jason Robertson. NHL insider Jeff Marek revealed on Monday that Robertson could potentially be available, and also mentioned Mitch Marner's name in connection to the Stars.
"Could the Stars move someone like Jason Robertson, who has one more year on his deal at an incredible $7.75 million value, to try to recoup Draft capital and free up cap space to once again go big-game hunting.

And if (and it's a big 'if') the Stars move Robertson, do we start to hear Mitch Marner's name attached to Dallas?"
The Stars are one of the few teams heading into the off-season with very little cap space and should be in store for changes after a third straight Conference Finals defeat.
Due to that uneasiness, Robertson could be on the outside looking in as they attempt to go big game hunting once again.

Why a Mitch Marner Sign-and-Trade For Jason Robertson Makes Sense For Both Sides

The Stars need impact forwards after a dismal playoff performance that saw Mikko Rantanen get very little help. Marner is exactly the type of forward they're looking for and a sign-and-trade could work on several levels.
Robertson's cap hit is currently $7.5 million and while Marner could command anywhere between $12M-$14M per season on his next deal, Dallas can accommodate that amount of money by shipping out a few undesirable contracts like Matt Dumba, for example.
For Toronto, Robertson could be the jolt of energy they need and he is coming off successive 80-point seasons after notching 109 points back in 2022-23.
His cap hit is manageable and he is set for restricted free agency in the summer of 2026, while also having a chance to play with brother, Nicholas.
The Leafs are going to need an impact player if they lose Marner and with very few options on the open market, this is the type of move they might have to make if push comes to shove.
