As we enter the month of August, the Toronto Maple Leafs and restricted free agent Mitch Marner remain at a standoff. It's no secret that Marner wants a contract similar to Auston Matthews, however the Maple Leafs are reluctant to do so. The Maple Leafs instead put a massive eight year contract worth $10million a year on the table but Marner rejected it. General manager Kyle Dubas understanding that Marner doesn't want a max length deal offered Marner what would have been a record setting bridge deal. According to James Mirtle of The Athletic, the Leafs offered Marner a three year deal worth $10million a season, a deal that would have set a new record smashing Nikita Kucherov's three year bridge deal he signed in 2016 for $4.8million a season. Mirtle adds that the Marner camp isn't interested in a eight or seven year deal while the Leafs don't want to dish out a one, two, four or five year deal. With both sides standing pat, this will likely continue through the month of August.
