Maple Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll is stepping away from the team, according to an official report from trusted NHL Insider Chris Johnston.

As we begin a new week of Maple Leafs pre-season hockey, the team will be without one of its key figures in Joseph Woll, who is stepping away from the team effective immediately.

Joseph Woll Taking Time Away From the Maple Leafs

Woll has been granted a leave of absence from the team for personal reasons, according to a report from NHL Insider Chris Johnston, who dropped the bombshell on Tuesday morning ahead of Leafs practice.

Woll's Absence in Toronto Not Related to Substance Issues

The news comes straight from Leafs GM Brad Treliving, who informed the media on Tuesday that Woll will be away from the team indefinitely for reasons not relating to substance abuse, per NHL.com's Dave A. McCarthy.
Last week, Woll missed time to begin training camp as he was reportedly under the weather. Now, one can't help but wonder if he had something weighing on him mentally, which was the real cause for the absence.

Woll's Leave From Leafs Due to Family Concerns

Frank Seravalli has since come forward with more information, suggesting that this issue is a family matter.
The team has since confirmed Seravalli's report with an official announcement, which they have shared via their social media accounts.
Woll was a huge factor for the Maple Leafs in the 2024-25 Stanley Cup playoffs, pushing the eventual Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers to 7 games. There's no question that his absence will be a noticeable one.
As Woll takes his leave, the focus shifts to Leafs goaltender Anthony Stolarz, who is currently working with the team to hammer out an extension. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman has already revealed the expected term and cap hit once the deal is finalized.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Joseph Woll and his family at this time, and we hope to see the 27-year-old back with the team before long.
