Leafs prospect Easton Cowan reveals his feelings on this past season's trade buzz after his name was mentioned several times in persistent trade rumours.

Coming into this year's training camp, Toronto Maple Leafs' top prospect Easton Cowan feels like he has a lot to prove, especially after all the trade buzz that surrounded the youngster ahead of last year's trade deadline.
While they were just rumours, Cowan's name was mentioned ad nauseam in any trade speculation that would have brought a true difference maker to Toronto. However, the Leafs ultimately kept him stashed away, which could not be said about his former teammate and friend, Fraser Minten, who was traded to Boston in the Brandon Carlo deal.
In a recent interview with Sportsnet's Luke Fox, Cowan opens up about that trade buzz and how he tried his best to focus on his game and not let it distract him from his greater goal of helping the London Knights win a championship.
I didn't really ever think I was gonna get traded. I knew the organization likes me here, and I love it here as well. So, very happy I didn't. I kinda focused on what I can control. Obviously, that's out of my control. Going back to London, putting in the work every day - that's what I can control. And I just focused on that.
Cowan felt a certain level of comfortability considering how highly he was regarded by the organization. He added that he loves being a member of the Leafs and that he's very relieved nothing came about, which helped him focus even more on his season with the Knights.
Trade rumours even spilled over into the off-season as the Leafs carried a lot of question marks after their second round defeat to the Florida Panthers. Any time they were linked to a star player, Cowan's name was always the first one brought up going the other way.
Now that the trade buzz has settled, Cowan is focusing on the upcoming slate of pre-season contests, as he looks to impress the Leafs decision-making brass and have his name stapled on the opening night roster.
With his junior career having come to a close, look for the 20-year-old prospect to make his mark this year as the Leafs look to unveil a new-look lineup on the 8th of October in anticipation of their season opener against Montreal.
