The Maple Leafs have officially recalled rookie goaltender Dennis Hildeby from the Toronto Marlies, raising some concerns over the health of Anthony Stolarz.

Just one day after Anthony Stolarz and the Toronto Maple Leafs dropped a 5-3 decision to the Buffalo Sabres, the team has announced that they have recalled 6'7" rookie goaltender Dennis Hildeby from the Toronto Marlies.

Hildeby's Recall Very Unexpected

The move comes as a bit of a surprise, given that it was already the expectation that Cayden Primeau would get the start for tonight's rematch against the Sabres, with Stolarz backing him up.
With Hildeby having been recalled, it does create some concern about the overall health status of Stolarz, who was seen taking part in a post-game media session last night with both knees heavily iced.
A report from Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman suggests that Hildeby's recall is simply to give Stolarz a night off, but if he sticks around in the coming days, Hildeby's presence could mean some missed time for Stolarz.

Stolarz Has Had a Very Challenging Workload

The Leafs have been relying solely on Stolarz to carry them through these first 8 games, with the veteran netminder receiving 7 starts over that span, with Primeau starting just one game, a 7-4 win over the Nashville Predators earlier this season.

Leafs in Good Hands With Hildeby

Hildeby has appeared in 2 games for the Marlies thus far this season, posting a stellar .962 SV% and a 0.97 GAA, winning both of his starts.
Thankfully for the Leafs, Joseph Woll has returned from his leave of absence and has already begun the return to play process, skating with the team earlier today. While he may still be quite a ways off, judging by Hildeby's early-season numbers, the Leafs will, at least temporarily, be in good hands.
