Ilya Samsonov has expressed his desire to stay in Toronto, but his performance in the playoffs may have burned that bridge already.

As the Leafs cleaned out their lockers today following yet another Game 7 loss and yet another first round exit, the players took some time to speak with the media on their way out. A frustrated Leafs fanbase seems ready to see Samsonov in a different jersey next year, but according to the Leafs netminder, he'd like to stay in the blue and white.

Ilya Samsonov wants to re-sign in Toronto, but his poor playoff performance may make it impossible

Samsonov told reporters that he loves the city, the team and the players in Toronto. He also says that he would like to re-sign on a deal with term due to having a young family that he doesn't want to uproot.
Samsonov understands that his play wasn't up to par in this series. It's clear that he is blaming himself for the Leafs' 7th first round exit in 8 years.
"I don't remember a time I felt like s*** like right now." - Samsonov on losing game 7

I am of two minds on the idea of bringing Samsonov back. On one hand, he clearly has issues keeping his head on straight over the course of a season and his good days aren't enough to make up for his bad ones. On the other hand, the goalie market is very thin this year in terms of UFAs. Samsonov way well be the best of the 2024 UFA goalie crop. If he's willing to take a pay cut and start the year as the Leafs , I could be talked into it. However, if he wants term, that might be another story.
