Popular analyst reveals what Mitch Marner's next contract will look like
An ex-Maple Leaf has confirmed what Mitch Marner's next contract will look like with either Toronto or another NHL club.
Popular advanced stat website Evolving Hockey has projected an extension for Marner at 8 years and $11.2M per season. That sounds like a bargain considering it is only a $300K raise from his current $10.9M AAV.
Unfortunately, Marner's extension number will come in much higher than that. On TSN's 'First Up' yesterday, former Leaf Carlo Colaiacovo explained how Marner's new contract is going to be a deterrent for teams interested in acquiring him and what he could look for on his next deal. He puts the Marner deal above $11.5M per season.
"What if the people that love Mitch Marner, love Marner as a player at the salary he is making right now or less than that and not at the salary he is likely going to command in free agency which is somewhere between $11.5 and $13.25 because that's the Toronto salary that he's put himself in.
Could you see a scenario where a team trades for Marner and gives him an 8x$13M deal a year. Sam Reinhart's not even going to get that this season." The Leafs, or any team for that matter, will have to weigh their options and determine if Marner is worth spending $13M per season on. For Leaf fans, that is an easy 'no' right now.
Whether the Leafs sign him to an extension, trade him, or let him walk in free agency, until a decision is made one way or another, Marner will continue to be a hot topic for the media. With the draft and free agency just around the corner, we could have clarification in the coming weeks as to what the Leafs' intentions are with Marner.
