John Tavares revealed that he intends to celebrate goal 499 and the Leafs' overtime win in a big way, to support the Blue Jays in the World Series.
A game-time decision that saw William Nylander take warmups resulted in the Swedish native missing his first regular season game for the Leafs since the 2021-2022 season.
The decision led to head coach Craig Berube shuffling his forward lines continuously throughout the game.
John Tavares Starts the Night Off Right
After the Sabres failed to capitalize on a two-on-one,
Matthew Knies found Tavares up the middle for a breakaway that led to the 34-year-old making no mistake with a rocket of a shot, snapping the Leafs' three-game losing streak.
The goal was also number 499 in his career, allowing him to score number 500 on Tuesday against the same Calgary Flames that Leafs legend Mats Sundin accomplished the feat against in 2006.
John Tavares Plans to Support Blue Jays to Celebrate Win and Goal 499
A 5:00 PM start for the Leafs gave everyone a chance to watch both games, with the Leafs ending the extra period with a few minutes to spare before the first pitch of Game 2 of the World Series.
Most fans headed home, but for Tavares, they will be making the short walk down the street to the Rogers Centre to support the Blue Jays in person.
» I think so,» said Tavares when asked if he was planning to swing by the Rogers Centre.
The Blue Jays are looking to take a 2-0 series lead before heading to LA for Games 3-5 early next week after a thrilling, dramatic Game 1 win.
