The Toronto Maple Leafs and general manager Kyle Dubas have a huge project this summer and that's getting the Mitch Marner contract extension done. Everybody is hoping the two sides can avoid a William Nylander like negotiation process which resulted in a holdout. However from all accounts the two sides are pretty far apart right now and it's not certain either is willing to budge. Pierre LeBrun gave a bit of an update regarding the situation for The Athletic. The likely scenario is similar to Auston Matthews where instead of signing a max deal, the two sides will agree on something around five years. However the Leafs want Marner at around $9.5million for five years and according to LeBrun there's no way Marner's camp accepts something like that and will want around $11million. When it comes to Marner the stats don't lie and he's been healthy since day one. With Marner's camp unwilling to budge, he might be forced to sign an offer sheet to get what he wants from the Leafs or the two sides might have to do the unthinkable and open up the possibility of a trade.
