Nick Robertson scored, but also took a terrible penalty in last night's game

After handily defeating the Edmonton Oilers Saturday night, the Toronto Maple Leafs were outdueled by the Carolina Hurricanes last night in a tightly contested 2-1 loss. It's the second time in eight days the Leafs have fallen to the Hurricanes after blowing a late, two-goal lead last Saturday.

The Leafs failed to capitalize on any of their four powerplays while the Hurricanes scored the game-winning goal on theirs in the first period. Speaking of powerplays, the Canes got one with just under six minutes to go in the second period when Leafs forward Nicholas Robertson attempted to bat the puck out of the air with his stick and inadvertently caught Canes defenseman Brady Skjei in the face.
Although Carolina failed to score, it was another play by Robertson that had many people questioning his decision-making. Why he would try to use his stick instead of his glove there is beyond me, but the game does unfold very quickly.
Robertson made up for the penalty by scoring the Leafs' only goal of the game in the third, but his penalty is the kind of play that Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe has called him out for in the past. Plays like that, especially in the offensive zone, are momentum killers. Robertson simply has to know better and do better.
With the Leafs off on Monday ahead of Tuesday's matchup against the New Jersey Devils, it will be interesting to see if Keefe feels that Robertson's penalty cost the Leafs enough momentum to warrant a trip to the press box yet again.
