NHL Insider Reveals What the Leafs Are Willing to Part With to Address a Clear Roster Need

The Maple Leafs are expected to be very active this summer, but with the off-season having already produced a lot of moves and generated a lot of buzz, there seems to be a lot more questions than answers at the moment in Toronto.

The Leafs were linked to power forward Mason Marchment before he was moved to the Seattle Kraken, and as Elliotte Friedman mentions in his latest "32 Thoughts" article, they were gutted after having missed out on a golden opportunity.

There are still plenty of options available on the open market with Toronto expected to be heavily involved with Brad Marchand, should he walk into free agency, but a bigger move will more than likely have to take place through a trade, one that Friedman believes will involve a member of the Leafs blueline.

The Leafs were always expected to look into addressing their depth at the forward position, but with Mitch Marner fully expected to walk and the club missing out on Marchment, there's a sense of urgency coming from the front office that could lead them into trading from a position of strength.

Morgan Rielly seems unlikely to move unless they find a way for him to waive his NMC, the trio of Chris Tanev, Jake McCabe, and Brandon Carlo are expected to be mainstays, which would then lead them into moving one of Oliver Ekman-Larsson or Simon Benoit for a forward.

It's hard to pinpoint what either of their markets currently look like, but Rielly would be the one that could net the Leafs exactly what they are looking for.

It would be an uncomfortable conversation, but as we've seen from New York Rangers GM Chris Drury, anything is possible when it comes to moving off of players holding onto NMCs.

Treliving and company have less than a week to get their ducks in a row before the hockey world convenes on draft day. After that, it's anyone's guess as to how things will shake out, but you can assure yourself the Leafs will be in the thick of a lot of trade talks.
