During the press conference, the Leafs made it known that they would be making a decision on the rest of the coaching staff in the coming days with reports surfacing that the Leafs had targeted Marc Savard from the Calgary Flames as one potential replacement. Those rumors intensified yesterday when it was revealed that the Flames and Savard agreed to part ways.
Assistant Coach Mike Van Ryn, who was an assistant under Berube during the St. Louis Blues Cup run in 2019, is a very likely candidate to remain on staff, but the same cannot be said for Manny Malholtra, Guy Boucher and Dean Chynoweth.
One of the top priorities for the Leafs is to find a coach that rejuvenate the power play that was absolutely demoralizing in the second half of the season and non-existent in the first round of the playoffs, going 1-for-21 against the Boston Bruins, but who didn't see that coming with a defensive-minded Boucher running the show with the man advantage?
With a number of candidates available to fill assistant positions, it may not just be the roster that looks completely different come training camp and opening night for the Leafs. The coaching staff could have as many as four new personnel - if Van Ryn is let go along with everyone else.
