As NHL teams finalize rosters, one young goalie hits waivers, and the Maple Leafs might just see him as the perfect depth solution.

With NHL training camps wrapping up and rosters being finalized, the 2025-26 season is finally upon us. Before we get there, though, the 32 NHL clubs have to get themselves under the 23-man roster threshold, which means the waiver wire is quite busy.
Every year, a few names on waivers spark league-wide interest, and this season is no different. Among the names that may interest the Leafs is Michael DiPietro, a 26-year-old goalie from Windsor, Ontario, who has yet to receive a real shot at establishing himself in the NHL.
Currently with the Boston Bruins organization, DiPietro has only appeared in three NHL games throughout his career. Despite the limited experience, he's long been viewed as a talented and athletic netminder who simply hasn't been given the right situation to prove himself.
With a modest contract with two more years at $812,500 annually, he's an intriguing option for any team in need of goaltending depth.
Several teams around the league have reportedly inquired about DiPietro in the past, including the Toronto Maple Leafs, Calgary Flames, and Carolina Hurricanes; three organizations that currently have questions in goal.
Toronto's situation, in particular, stands out. With Joseph Woll on a leave of absence with no timeline for a return, and veteran James Reimer's best days long behind him, the Leafs may be actively exploring other options to stabilize their crease.
With Toronto being previously linked to DiPietro, it makes for a very interesting situation.
If the Leafs do put in a waiver claim, it could mark a quiet but smart acquisition, one that gives them a young, motivated goaltender under team control for two seasons at a bargain price.
The fact is, though, that the Leafs may not be able to retain him if they do put in a waiver claim. Eventually, once Woll is back in Toronto, DiPietro would likely be placed back on waivers, and would be likely to wind up right back in Boston.
With final rosters due today, we won't have to wait too long for our answer as to whether the Leafs will put in a claim or not. If they opt not to put in a claim for DiPietro, then perhaps we'll see Reimer's PTO evolve into a 1-year deal with the club for some added goaltending depth.
