The Toronto Maple Leafs officially cut ties with veteran goaltender James Reimer on Monday after picking up young netminder Cayden Primeau off of waivers.

It was a nice story when James Reimer inked a PTO with the Maple Leafs last month after Joseph Woll stepped away from the team for personal reasons.
Unfortunately, all good things eventually come to an end, and on Monday, the Leafs officially ended Reimer's PTO, mere hours after claiming former Canadiens prospect Cayden Primeau off of waivers from Carolina.
Originally, the thought process was that the Leafs may opt to offer Reimer a 1-year contract to act as the team's 3rd string goaltender, due to the veteran having much more NHL experience than rookie Dennis Hildeby.
On Sunday, however, when the Leafs saw a number of quality young goaltenders hit the waiver wire, they opted to pounce on Primeau over some of the other solid options available in Michael DiPietro (BOS) and Clay Stevenson (WSH).
For Reimer, this one has to sting. At 37 years of age, his options are certainly going to be limited. However, he did post a .901 SV% in 22 games in Buffalo last season, so he clearly still has some quality hockey left in the tank -- at least one more year or two, anyway.
For as short as the stay was for Reimer on his second tour in Toronto, at least we got the brief "feel-good" moment of seeing him return to game action back where it all started. Reimer played a period and a half for the Leafs in their pre-season finale against Detroit this past weekend.
