Connor McDavid breaks hearts of Leafs Nation with the Toronto native currently finalizing an extension with the Edmonton Oilers, per Elliotte Friedman.

The Edmonton Oilers appear to be keeping Connor McDavid in the fold, as Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman is reporting that the two sides are hammering out a last-minute deal before the season opener.
According to NHL Insider Frank Seravalli on recent edition of the "Big Show" podcast, the Leafs were among 4 teams keeping their options open by carrying cap space for Connor McDavid next summer.
"Teams are keeping their powder dry...at least until that deal is signed and he's off the table, if you're a marquee franchise...Leafs, Blackhawks, Rangers...Kings, you have to want to keep that door open.
Today, however, a conflicting report has surfaced suggesting that McDavid and the Oilers have begun to make some progress on a potential extension after months of delays and hesitation.
"Sounds like Oilers and Connor McDavid have nudged forward conversations on a contract extension - the door is wide open now for a deal to be in place before Edmonton's season opener."
Friedman has since confirmed that the Oilers and McDavid are currently finalizing a deal to keep him in Edmonton.
"Let's update this: Connor McDavid will be extending with the Edmonton Oilers."

Connor McDavid Confirms the News

McDavid himself solidified things with a social media post confirming the imminent deal.
At this moment, no firm contract details have been announced, but that information is expected shortly.
According to Sportsnet's Mark Spector, the deal is expected to be less than the $17M AAV of Kirill Kaprizov and could be as little as 2 years in length.
While we await official confirmation of the details, the Leafs will have to pivot on any plans they may have had to lure McDavid home to Toronto next summer. The good news is that they have $24M in projected cap space, so they have plenty of money to spend.
