Maple Leafs Make Puzzling Goaltending Decision Against Senators
Craig Berube appears to be straying from his routine when it comes to choosing a starting goalie as he made a surprising decision ahead of the Leafs' clash with Ottawa.
Following the 4 Nations Face-Off, Leafs head coach Craig Berube announced he had planned to rotate Joseph Woll and Anthony Stolarz for the team's remaining games.
However, a few days later, he revealed he would prefer one of them to take the ball and run with it and be the Leafs' starter for the majority of their remaining games leading up to the playoffs.
Despite looking a tad shaky in his last two starts, Woll would have been scheduled to start on Saturday if Berube was sticking to his original plan. Unfortunately for the former third-round pick, the Leafs' bench boss has elected to go back to Stolarz after his performance Thursday against the Florida Panthers.
The decision comes as a bit of a surprise to some given that fatigue appears to be setting in, according to former NHL goaltender Stephen Valiquette.
Additionally, games against the Ottawa Senators have typically come down to a 'last shot wins', games that Woll has been far better at saving.
Although he was saddled with the loss on Thursday, Stolarz looked much better than he had in his previous starts and the Leafs are hoping that he can build some positive momentum and string together a few victories as the Leafs look to close the gap on the Panthers atop of the Atlantic Division.
