Maple Leafs Announce the Passing of a Legend on Saturday

The Toronto Maple Leafs have announced the loss of a legend within the organization, as a former GM has passed away.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are mourning the loss of a franchise legend, as Gerry McNamara has passed away at the age of 90.
As per the Maple Leafs on X:
"We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Maple Leafs player, scout, and General Manager, Gerry McNamara. Gerry made an enduring impact on the organization, most notably by bringing Börje Salming to Toronto, helping pave the way for future generations of European players in the NHL. As General Manager, he continued to shape the franchise, including the selection of Wendel Clark as the first overall pick in the 1985 Entry Draft.

Gerry McNamara's connection to the Maple Leafs spanned decades and left a lasting legacy. As a player, he appeared in seven games as a goaltender during the 1960-61 and 1969-70 seasons.
In the 1970s, he transitioned into a scouting role, where he made one of the most impactful decisions in franchise history-bringing over Börje Salming from Sweden. Salming went on to become arguably the greatest defenseman to ever wear the blue and white, and helped open the door for European talent in the NHL.
McNamara later served as General Manager of the Maple Leafs for seven years throughout the 1980s. During his tenure, he famously selected Wendel Clark with the first overall pick in the 1985 NHL Entry Draft-a move that brought one of the most beloved and iconic players in franchise history to Toronto.
