One Maple Leafs analyst directs some scorn towards Mitch Marner over his behaviour towards the Leafs since the end of the 2024-25 season.
While a continued union between Mitch Marner and
the Toronto Maple Leafs never really appeared to be in the cards once their playoff run came to an end, it doesn't seem like many expected the behaviour from Marner that followed.
While friendly banter was never expected, his movements have not gone unnoticed from Leafs media members, including Sportsnet's JD Bunkis, who let his feelings be known on the topic on his JD Bunkis Podcast.
"He [Marner] decides Toronto isn't the place he wants to play. Okay, good for him. It's not for everybody. The part I can't understand is the animosity. The Leafs gave you everything, drafted you when it wasn't a slam dunk, gave you a huge extension, never pushed you to be traded. What is he so mad about?!"
While Marner received a lot of vitriol from the fan base during the playoffs, the Maple Leafs did good by him every chance they had. Unsuccessful cores rarely last 9 seasons, let alone 4-5 straight years, but the Leafs never looked upon Marner as a trade piece until he refused to negotiate, even though they could have approached him at any time to waive his NMC.
Bunkis raises a good point regarding Marner's off-season so far and it's a feeling shared by many in the city. Marner had all the makings of becoming an all-time great in franchise history. Currently sitting in 4th for assists (520) and 5th in points (741), all that has seemingly washed away with his behaviour of late.
The animosity that he carries will be seared in the minds of Toronto fans for years to come, and because of this, his legacy is tainted.
