Recent comments from Oilers superstar Connor McDavid feed into the possibility of him walking from the team next summer and signing with the Maple Leafs.

Connor McDavid is arguably the best player in hockey and his last two post-season trips have shown that the Edmonton Oilers just don't have enough to get over the line despite having two of the league's top superstars.
It seems almost impossible to think about the possibility of McDavid being a free agent, but his recent comments will spark conversation, debates, arguments, and everything in between from now until possibly next summer.
McDavid started off his season-ending media availability by saying the usual stuff where winning means everything and that if there's an opportunity to keep doing that in Edmonton, he will remain an Oiler for the foreseeable future.
"Winning would be at the top of the list, it's the most important thing. If I feel that there's a good window to win here over and over again, then signing is no problem."
However, things took a sharp turn near the end, as McDavid continued by saying he's in no rush to sign an extension with the Oilers and that he doesn't feel there's a timeline from now to July 1st in 2026 to get a new deal done.
"It's only been a couple of days, I'm sure we'll get into it over the course of the next couple of weeks but again, Im not in a rush to make any decision, so I don't think there needs to be any timeline...but for me, I'm not in a rush that way."

That in it of itself is super important to note, because when he signed his 8-year deal coming off his rookie contract, he made sure to get it done as soon as possible because he didn't want it to be a distraction for the team or for himself.
Fast forward to 2025, and with back-to-back losses in the finals, things are looking a little more gloomy for Edmonton. That could assuredly work in favour of the other 31 teams, but perhaps none more than the Toronto Maple Leafs, who could give the Richmond Hill native everything he wants and then some.
With Auston Matthews and William Nylander signed long-term, adding McDavid to the fray would be the type of move that could finally bring success to Toronto and it could be a beneficial move for team and player as they could both search for that elusive Cup win together.
