During his year-end media availability after another disappointing post-season, John Tavares made his wishes known regarding his future with the Maple Leafs.
Unfortunately, after seven years, the Leafs are no closer to a Stanley Cup and after a disappointing second-round exit, and his future once again came into question.
However, at the Leafs' season-ending media availability, Tavares shared some surprising news regarding a potential extension when asked about his future.
"We're coming up soon for decisions to be made, but still focusing on the end of the season here. Had positive conversations today with (Treliving) and (Berube)."
After noting that he had good discussions with Craig Berube and Brad Treliving Tuesday morning, he shared that a contract extension may be closer than many initially thought.
"I'm very optimistic that it can work out where I'm back."
Whether it happens before or after free agency begins on July 1st, it appears that Tavares will spend at least the next few seasons in the blue and white. What his contract will look like, only he and the Leafs know, but after a season that saw him tally 38 goals and 74 points in 75 games, he would certainly be welcomed back by Leafs Nation, especially if Marner does indeed chase the money elsewhere.
