A day after an embarrassing loss to the Florida Panthers in Game 5, Chris Johnston dropped some substantial news about Mitch Marner's future with the Maple Leafs.

Abysmal performances in Game 3 and Game 4 led to many slamming Leafs star forward Mitch Marner, who is a pending free agent.
Unfortunately, things went from bad to worse for Marner as he and linemate Auston Matthews wore the brunt of frustration from Leafs Nation and the Toronto media following their 6-1 drubbing on Wednesday night in what many believe was his final home game for the Leafs.
The pending unrestricted free agent has had his future questioned all season, and it was thrust further into the spotlight when it was revealed that he was asked to waive his no-movement clause ahead of the trade deadline in a deal that would have landed Mikko Rantanen in Toronto.
With the Leafs' season hinging on Game 6 on Friday, and an off-day on Thursday, The Athletic's Chris Johnston dropped a bombshell of an update on the 28-year-old's future in Toronto.
"There is absolutely zero reason to believe that he'll be signing another contract in Toronto on or before July 1 - not after refusing to negotiate an in-season extension with the Leafs or even considering a request from management to waive his no-movement clause at the trade deadline," wrote Johnston.

That was already well known in Toronto and across the league. What followed however revealed that Marner's parting gift to the Leafs was nixing a trade that would have landed him his replacement in former Avs star, Rantanen.
"There's been a growing sense that the 28-year-old winger wants a fresh start after enduring an avalanche of criticism for his team's repeated playoff shortcomings."

It comes as no surprise to Leafs Nation, who at this point, want him as far away from the team as possible in the hopes that ridding themselves of the enigmatic forward will enable them to try to fix the problems in Toronto.
