Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews defended the fans' decision to leave Game 5 early to beat the traffic after Florida hung 6 goals on them at Scotiabank Arena.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are reeling after a brutal 6-1 loss to the Florida Panthers in Game 5 -- a performance many are calling the team's worst of the entire Core 4 era.
The blowout sparked visible frustration from fans at Scotiabank Arena, who booed throughout the game and began leaving early. Some even threw jerseys onto the ice -- a clear sign of just how poor the team's effort was.
Captain Auston Matthews addressed the fans' reaction post-game, defending the patrons and slamming his own team's effort. As reported by Chris Johnston on X:
"We didn't give them much reason to stick around."
Matthews has struggled to find his usual scoring touch during this postseason, and many have speculated that he's playing through an injury. Despite tallying 10 points in 11 games, he has only two goals in these playoffs, which is a sharp decline for a player who netted 69 goals in the regular season in 2023-24.
The lone bright spot in the blowout came from Nick Robertson, who scored late in the third period after finally getting into a game after being scratched since Game 3 of Round 1 against the Ottawa Senators. While it was good to see Robertson find the back of the net, the goal had little impact on the outcome.
The Maple Leafs now face elimination, heading to Florida for a must-win Game 6 on Friday. If they want to stave off elimination, they'll have to do so in a venue where they've yet to claim a victory in this postseason. Their season is on the line, and a dramatic turnaround will be required to stay alive.
