Maple Leafs star forward Mitch Marner reportedly nixed more than just a trade to the Carolina Hurricanes at the deadline according to Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli.
His refusal to waive led to the Maple Leafs offering other packages for the now Dallas Stars forward, but none met the asking price the Hurricanes had set.
Mitch Marner Reportedly Turned Down Multiple Trade Proposeals From The Maple Leafs
According to Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff, the Leafs had a handful other options they were working on at the deadline that involved dealing the former first-round pick to other potential destinations other than just Carolina.
"I don't think Carolina was the only possibility for Mitch Marner to go to. I think they were working on other options to get their hands on Mikko Rantanen and in the end there was not the willingness to make it happen."
While the Leafs do like Marner, as GM Brad Treliving has stated multiple times, the team was almost hellbent on getting Rantanen to address a need on the wing and secure a legitimate playoff performer.
Rantanen was also reportedly willing to sign an extension in Toronto, which would have effectively replaced Marner either by pushing him out the door or letting him walk at his own discretion.
While Leafs Nation ponders with the 'what ifs' had the trade been made, they will also prepare for life without Marner, as the Leafs are likely doing, until a final decision is made at or before the start of free agency.
