Golf Legend Rory McIlroy Drops Memorable One-Liner About the Maple Leafs

Golf legend Rory McIlroy shared an encouraging message directed at Maple Leafs fans everywhere after recent meeting with MLSE CEO Keith Pelley.
The Toronto Maple Leafs were once again eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs in maddeningly frustrating fashion, losing to their divisional foes, the Florida Panthers, in 7 games and falling short in a winner-take-all playoff game for the 7th straight time.
While the Panthers have once again advanced to play in the Stanley Cup Final, the Maple Leafs remain without an appearance in the Final since 1967, which is also coincidentally the last time they raised the hallowed trophy.
On Wednesday, Golfing icon Rory McIlroy, who is in Canada at the RBC Canadian Open at TPC Toronto not long after winning the 2025 Masters tournament, received a Maple Leafs sweater from Keith Pelley, CEO of Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment, and gave hope to Toronto fans everywhere with a follow-up comment.
"If I can win the Masters, then the Leafs can win the Stanley Cup. I hope they do it, I was pulling for them hard, especially now because Keith is involved.
McIlroy also went on to express his appreciation for playing in front of Canadian sports fans.
"I haven't hidden my sort of aspirations for National Opens and where I would like them to be, what their standing is in the professional game of golf. So this has meant a lot. I first came here in 2019, once the date changed. It used to be that week after the Open Championship, which wasn't ideal for a lot of players. I honestly love the date change. I love that it's the week leading into the U.S. Open.

The Maple Leafs, who are now in year 58 of their Stanley Cup drought, have already made a major change with the decision not to renew team president Brendan Shanahan's contract. More changes are also expected during the summer.
