Great Buy-Low Option Emerges for the Maple Leafs, and Brad Treliving Would Be Wise to Inquire

With several notable names linked to the Toronto Maple Leafs as potential upgrades at centre, GM Brad Treliving still has to worry about filling the rest of his lineup.

With that in mind, a name has surfaced in trade rumours that could provide a great, low-cost option to the Maple Leafs when it comes to shoring up their depth.

Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman says a name he's starting to hear out there a lot is Matias Maccelli of the Utah Mammoth.

Maccelli was a fourth-round draft pick of the Arizona Coyotes back in 2019, and he surpassed expectations his first two full seasons in the NHL by putting up 49 and 57 points, respectively. His offensive play took a drop in 2024-25, but Maccelli has other benefits to offer the Leafs, like hitting, blocking shots, and playing the penalty kill.

As per Puckpedia, Maccelli has one year left on his current contract, which carries a cap hit of $3.425 million annually, a very affordable price in today's NHL.

Treliving will certainly have several irons in the fire as trades get underway over the summer. The Maple Leafs have also been linked to versatile Calgary Flames defenceman Rasmus Andersson.

Maccelli is a name that Treliving should consider either at the draft, or as free agency gets underway on July 1st, which are usually the dates where a lot of trading begins around the league.
