"The Toronto Maple Leafs lost a big piece of their coaching staff earlier today. The Ottawa Senators announced that DJ Smith has accepted their vacant head coaching position after spending the last four years in Toronto. General manager Kyle Dubas wasted no time in finding a replacement as they named Paul McFarland as an assistant. McFarland spent last season with the Florida Panthers and led them to having a massively dominant power play which enjoyed a 26.8% success rate. "I'm extremely excited to be coming home and joining the Maple Leafs organization," McFarland said in a release. "The Leafs have a great, young team and this is an amazing opportunity to work with Mike, his staff and these talented players."
The team also made it official and announced that assistant Jim Hiller has been given full permission to explore opportunities outside of Toronto.
