"With all the dust settling after the 2018-19 season, the offseason officially starts. One thing we'll hear a lot about over the next couple days will be all the medical procedures some of the Leafs will be going through. First man up, Auston Matthews. The Leafs announced that Matthews underwent "a procedure today to remove surgical hardware from a 2014 surgery".As Kristen Shilton points out, it's likely related to the surgery following a knee on knee hit collision that happened with the USNTDP U17's. He should be able to continue his on-ice program at his regular expected timetable.
