The Maple Leafs caught a stray from the Colorado Avalanche's social media team reminding them of an embarrassing moment against the Carolina Hurricanes.
The social media team for the Colorado Avalanche recently started a summer 'Haiku For You' series where they are slowly making there way through all 31 NHL teams creating 3-line haiku poems for each and posting them on 'X'.
On Tuesday, the Avalanche made one for the Carolina Hurricanes that purposely took aim at one of the more embarrassing moments in recent Leafs history.
How Long Has It Been Since the Leafs Lost to Their Zamboni Driver?
After both Hurricanes goalies, James Reimer and Peter Mrazek (also two former Leafs goalies, ironically) were injured in the first and second periods of that game on February 22, 2020, the Hurricanes had to call upon Ayres, who was listed as the emergency backup goaltender, to enter the game midway through the second period.
After giving up two goals on two shots to begin, Ayres stopped the final eight shots to help the Hurricanes salvage a 6-3 victory.
Not reminded of that embarrassing effort enough already, exactly 1,956 days after one of the most embarrassing efforts from the Leafs in recent memory, the Avs made sure to remind everyone of it with their haiku on Wednesday.
It wouldn't be shocking if this kicked off a bit of a new rivalry, but with the two contenders playing in difference conferences, perhaps this one will just fizzle out as the dog days of summer wear on.
