With questions mounting over Toronto Maple Leafs pending free agent Mitch Marner, his agent has released a public statement in an attempt to clear the air.

Ever since his comments at the Maple Leafs' season-ending presser that seemed to indicate that he was as good as gone, the future of pending free agent Mitch Marner has been to focal point for many fans, analysts, reporters and Insiders.
Marner has said very little about his plans going forward, but it has been noted that when questioned about it following the Game 7 loss to Florida, he did not specifically say that he wanted to stay.
Now, Marner's agent Darren Ferris has issued a public statement for the first time since the Maple Leafs were eliminated from the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs by the Panthers. In a statement to the New York Times, Ferris said negotiations will take place entirely in private and not to expect a legitimate update until something is done.
"With the season concluded, there's naturally going to be speculation about what's next. At this time, we're not in a position to share any updates regarding future plans.

These are private matters, and when there's something definitive to communicate, we'll do so through the proper channels. Until then, we appreciate your understanding and respect for the process."

New York Times journalist Jonas Siegel said in his article that the Maple Leafs tried to sign Marner during the regular season, and it was a contract that would have kept him with the team for life, while also making him their top-paid player. Marner declined and, according to Siegel, he has never explained why.
It seems like all but a foregone conclusion that Marner will be at least entertaining offers from other teams when NHL free agency kicks in on July 1. He would be the top free agent on the market, and there's little question that other teams will be willing to sign him to a long-term, big money contract.
Despite coach Craig Berube advising management to bring Marner back, Siegel believes a breakup is what's best for both parties involved, and it's difficult to disagree with that assessment. Maple Leafs fans are likely going to see a very different team come training camp in September.
