After the deadline passed just a few days ago in relation to several college prospects who had yet to be signed by their respective clubs, the Toronto Maple Leafs dipped their toes into the water as we suspected and signed a former 2nd round pick previously owned by the Detroit Red Wings.

Robert Mastrosimone signed a one-year AHL contract with the Toronto Marlies earlier today. Mastrosimone was drafted in the 2nd round of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft by the Wings with the 54th pick, which was, ironically, right after the Maple Leafs drafted Nick Robertson with the 53rd.

He scored 60 points in his draft season with the Chicago Steel of the USHL before committing to Boston University ahead of the 2019-20 season. He spent 3 years in Boston, scoring 21 goals and 50 points before committing to Arizona State University in 2022-23, where he scored 11 goals and 42 points in 38 games.

Mastrosimone had a couple rough seasons with Boston University before finally finding his stride over the last 2 years. Now he will be reporting to the Marlies, hoping for a reversal of fortune for his hockey career.

He was also a former teammate of Nick Abruzzese with the Chicago Steel in 2018-19 and should be playing alongside his Chicago Steel teammate heading into the 2023-24 season.
