Some unfortunate news to share on Wednesday, as early this morning, Leafs legend Borje Salming released a statement detailing that he has been diagnosed with ALS or Lou Gehrig´s disease - a disease for which there is no cure.

"I do not know how the days ahead will be, but I understand that there will be challenges greater than anything I have ever faced. I also recognize that there is no cure but there are numerous worldwide trials going on and there will be a cure one day. In the meantime, there are treatments available to slow the progression and my family and I will remain positive. Since I started playing ice hockey as a little kid in Kiruna, and throughout my career, I have given it my all. And I will continue to do so," Salming said of his earth-shattering diagnosis.

Salming broke into the NHL with the Leafs during the 1973-74 season where he played 1099 of his 1148 games. He joined the NHL at a time when European players were not thought to be tough enough to play in the NHL, yet he amassed 1344 penalty minutes throughout his career. Known for the scar across his cheek that required more than 200 stitches, Salming was and still is a fan favourite in Toronto.

We wish Borje all the best in his upcoming treatments and hope for the best possible outcome for him and his family. Unfortunately, the condition is still considered terminal and, barring a medical breakthrough, Salming has the toughest fight of his life ahead of him. Truly devastating news.
