Entering the final year of his current contract, Pastrnak's sky-high asking price for an extension is revealed

Bruins' superstar David Pastrnak is entering the final year of his 6-year, $40M deal he signed back in 2017 and has already voiced his displeasure about the firing of Bruce Cassidy. Reports have also indicated that he is not sure if he wants to sign a long-term extension in Boston.

According to Joe Haggerty, Pastrnak is reportedly looking for a max-term deal worth north of $10M per season. The deal would be similar to the one that Jonathan Huberdeau just signed with the Flames (8x$10.5M). Haggerty also reported that the Bruins, meanwhile, would be more comfortable with a deal similar to Johnny Gaudreau's new deal with Columbus (7x$9.5M) because they don't want to have any contracts over $10M on the books.

The team and Pastrnak's camp have had discussions about an extension, but the two sides are currently perceived as "not close". At this point, it doesn't seem as though a new contract will be signed before the 2022/23 season begins and with the Bruins missing Brad Marchand, along with 3 of their top 6 defensemen until at least December, Pastrnak could be dealt at the deadline for a haul of riches if the Bruins find themselves out of the playoff hunt. Moving Pastrnak would almost certainly trigger a rebuild.
