When it was announced that the Leafs had gotten permission to interview ex-Flames GM Brad Treliving, there were likely going to be certain limitations in place until July 1st. Technically, Treliving is under contract with the Flames until June 30 and the most likely limitations were surrounding draft activity. As we found out on Thursday, those limitation rumours were true.
Today, during Treliving's introductory press conference, Leafs' President of Hockey Ops Brendan Shanahan confirmed that there are stipulations and limitations on Treliving until July 1st. Shanahan did not get into specifics, but Chris Johnston confirmed that Treliving won't be a full participant at the upcoming draft. Given that he knows Calgary's plans for the draft, it makes sense and is common practice around the NHL. We can assume that Treliving will not be able to voice his opinion or even be present at the Leafs' draft table or during their scouting meetings on who the Leafs should draft. However, he should still be able to be a participant in making trades, if he chooses to do so at the draft.
