Leafs prospect and 15th overall 2020 draft pick, Rodion Amirov, has touched down in Toronto and begun working with Leafs training with staff. What this means in the grand scheme of things is unclear at this point. Will he stay with the Marlies this season? Will he work with the Leafs' development team and medical staff before being loaned back to Salavat Yulaev? Those questions are yet to be answered, but I'd imagine we'll have some clarity before too long.
The 21-year-old winger spent last season at home in Russia after being diagnosed with a brain tumour in February after receiving treatment for an unrelated injury. Despite undergoing numerous surgeries, and treatments Amirov has continued training off and on the ice as much as he can. In early September, he even joined KHL club HC Salavat Yulaev for a season-opening road trip, but when he will be ready to return to play is still up in the air.
The update above shows a happy and healthy-looking Amirov working out with Leafs staff, which is tremendous progress. It's unlikely he will be seen with the Leafs AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies, this season, but it creates hope for maybe next season, given he is ready and healthy.
