At the end of the 2021-2022 season, the Maple Leafs and then General Manager Kyle Dubas made the decision to not sign Jack Campbell to a lengthy contract extension. Reports at the time indicated the Leafs did not want to go more than three years while Campbell was looking for five years. The impasse led to Campbell signing with the Edmonton Oilers for five years at an AAV of $5M per season.

Campbell had an up and down first season with the Oilers playing in just 36 games, losing the net to Stuart Skinner. In those 36 games, Campbell went 21-9-4 while posting a .888 save percentage and 3.41 GAA. This season has not gotten better for the former 11th overall pick as he is 1-4-0 in five games and has posted an atrocious .873 save percentage and 4.50 GAA.

His poor start has led to the Oilers placing Campbell on waivers today. While some Leaf fans expected Ryan Reaves to be placed on waivers a day after playing under five minutes, no one expected a starting goalie, let alone one making $5M per season to find the waiver wire this afternoon. Early word is that Calvin Pickard will be called up.

Campbell still has 3 years left after this season on his current deal and if the Oilers can't trade him after he clears waivers, he could very well be bought out in the summer.

In addition to Campbell landing on waivers, another former Leaf was also waived today as Calgary placed Dryden Hunt on the waiver wire.
