Auston Matthews reveals where he'd like to play in the next Global Series
After wrapping up a thrilling 4-3 overtime win against the Minnesota Wild to close out the Global Series in Stockholm, Sweden, the Leafs were reflecting on the experience and thinking towards next year.
When asked in a post game media scrum about the next possible destinations,
Auston Matthews suggested a place that has some meaning to him: Mexico City. Matthews, as many know, is of Mexican heritage, so playing in Mexico City would carry as much significance to him as playing in Sweden had for
William NylanderSeeing the incredible success that Nylander had in his return to his home country, it seems Matthews is longing for that same feeling in Mexico, where his mother's family is from.
Play-by-play announcer Gord Miller also chimed in on the idea, adding credence to the idea of playing in Mexico City, revealing that the Dallas Stars have also had a desire to play there in the next Global Series.
Playing outside of Canada and the United States has created a new buzz to these games, and could be fantastic for growing the game and the NHL's brand globally - especially in a destination not thought of as a hockey market. Mexico City would certainly qualify. Hopefully, the NHL considers this in their future plans.
