T.J. Oshie knocked unconscious by huge open ice hit
The Edmonton Oilers laid a 5-0 beating on the Washington Capitals yesterday in Washington, but while the Caps lost the game, they also lost an important piece of their lineup in T.J. Oshie.
During the early stages of the 2nd period, Oshie was skating through the neutral zone attempting to cross the Oilers' blueline without the puck when
Mattias Ekholm stepped up on him and lowered the boom, expecting
Connor McMichael to feed him the puck.
Ekholm caught Oshie leaning forward, which resulted in some head contact, which sent him crashing to the ice very hard, rendering him motionless for a moment before the trainer came out to attend to him.
Oshie would be able to get up and skate off under his own power, but did not return to the game, finishing his night with just under 7 minutes of ice time. Oshie has a pretty lengthy injury history, so this situation is not a good one for he and the Capitals.
At this point, the Capitals have not said much, other than to inform the fans that Oshie is out with an upper-body injury. Given the nature of the hit, I'm sure it's fair to suggest that we're probably talking about a concussion here.
