Nick Alberga, the co-host of Leafs Morning Take, made a pair of interesting observations on Sunday evening about Connor McDavid and Leafs captain Auston Matthews.

On Sunday afternoon, Connor McDavid shocked the hockey world when he signed a two-year extension with the Edmonton Oilers at a ridiculously low $12.5M per season, proving that winning is everything to him.
In August of 2023, the Leafs and captain Auston Matthews were in a similar boat, with the franchise cornerstone entering the final year of his deal before announcing a four-year extension.

Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews Could Both Hit Free Agency in 2028

With the news of McDavid's extension on Sunday, the two superstars are now locked up with their respective teams until 2028 -- something Alberga noted on 'X' Sunday evening with an interesting caveat.
Not only could the duo become free agents in the same off-season, but they are represented by the same agent and agency in Judd Moldaver and Wasserman Hockey.
The good news for the Leafs is that Moldaver doesn't push his clients to free agency the same way that Mitch Marner's agent Darren Ferris does.
The bad news is that the Leafs have just three seasons to show Matthews that it is worth staying and signing long-term in Toronto. The same can be said for the Oilers and their captain.
Should both hit free agency, it would be quite the spectacle. All 32 teams would be lining up to sign one, and potentially both stars as they enter the tail end of their prime years.
It may seem ridiculous that they would sign with the same team given that they are both number one centers, but the quickly rising salary cap certainly makes it possible.
Combining a rising salary cap and both players' willingness to take less than market value to win, and any team would become an instant Stanley Cup favourite if they were able to land both.
