Leafs Unveil Jersey Numbers for Newcomers Cayden Primeau and Sammy Blais

The Maple Leafs have been a busy team over the last few weeks, but even more so in this last week, having waived a handful of roster hopefuls, put in waiver claims for two helpful new pieces in Sammy Blais and Cayden Primeau and finalizing their opening night roster.

The Leafs officially released James Reimer from his PTO, cutting the reunion short after claiming Primeau off of waivers on Monday, and the organization has wasted no time in moving on, as Primeau and Blais were both present for practice on Tuesday.

As the pair took to the ice at Ford Performance Centre in Toronto, they did so sporting their brand new Leafs practice jerseys -- Primeau wearing number 30 and Blais wearing number 79.

Primeau's number 30 has been worn 24 times before, being last assigned to Matt Murray (2023-2025) and Michael Hutchinson (2019-2022). Meanwhile, Blais becomes the first player ever to wear number 79 in Toronto, according to Hockey-Reference.

The Leafs' most recent update on Joseph Woll was that the 27-year-old netminder was progressing and that he was doing well, but he still has not returned to Toronto from his leave of absence, meaning that Primeau may be the backup for the foreseeable future.

For Blais, he may be new to Toronto, but he is not new to head coach Craig Berube. The pair won a Stanley Cup together in 2019.
