Leafs forward Matthew Knies may be facing supplemental discipline following a dangerous elbow early in Thursday's pre-season game against the Detroit Red Wings.

At the end of the first period of the Leafs' second-to-last pre-season game against the Detroit Red Wings, Leafs forward Matthew Knies was called for an illegal check to the head when he caught Wings defenceman Simon Edvinsson with a bit of a blindside elbow.
Edvinsson was shaken up on the play but remains in the game.

Will Knies Face Supplemental Discipline?

Despite there being no apparent injury to Edvinsson on the play, Knies could find himself on a call with the Department of Player Safety, given that it is the type of play they are trying to get out of the game.
If the Leafs' budding star were to face any supplemental discipline, it would likely only be a fine, but with the league previously making an example of Leafs players, a suspension is possible.
The league's lack of consistency when it comes to these types of plays has left many fans, players and teams with little to no understanding of what is or isn't a suspendable offense.
It is worth mentioning that Knies himself was on the receiving end of an illegal check to the head last season, though the league did not suspend Zach Whitecloud for the hit, even though Knies was injured.
