Report: John Tavares Will Be The Next Leafs' Captain.

"While the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Montreal Canadiens in two straight preseason games, it's been Auston Matthews stealing all the headlines. Matthews is of course dealing with some legal issues in Arizona due to a summer incident and apparently didn't tell the organization. Due to all the turmoil, it seems Matthews will no longer be named captain.The Leafs still want to have a captain moving forward and according to two insiders, it'll be hometown boy John Tavares. Tavares served as captain of the New York Islanders and is considered the "safe choice" moving forward. "I would've told you a week ago that Matthews would be Captain but I can't see that happening now" Chris Johnston told SN960.
Elliotte Friedman also believes that there's no way Matthews becomes captain now and the organization has chosen Tavares.
